The first half of The Misfit of Demon King Academy's second season was a bit rocky in places—both in production and in how the story was told. However, it did a great job overall of taking the one major looming plot hole from the first season and turning it into a time-traveling adventure that had personal implications for many of our supporting characters. And, in the end, the conclusion felt so perfectly complete that I forgot that it was only the first half of the season.

Our new arc seems to be centered around the biggest hanging plot thread from the season's first half: the fate of Militia, the goddess of creation. While she was with Anos when he died, she was nowhere to be found during the time of Anos' trip to the past. However, while we get a scene of the two going from antagonists to friends in the distant past, this specific episode is more concerned with being an epilogue to the events of the first half of the season than setting up for what is to come.

This means we get a lot of cute scenes with Anos and the extended cast. Sasha gets a wake-up call from Anos and Anos' boyish alter ego returns to school to make Misha happy. Meanwhile, we get a cute moment as the idea of “talking with your sword” becomes literal during a sparring match between Shin and Lay. We also get our quota of “Anos being Anos” as he turns a dragon into a monster, kills it in one hit, and tortures his political rivals into becoming his allies—all in about a minute. It's fun stuff all around.

However, the return of Emilia was the most interesting bit of the episode. Way back in the first season, he turned her into a mixed-blood demon to both punish her actions and teach her humility for her pro-pureblood stance. During the last arc, she truly understands what it was like to be on the receiving end of prejudice—and that even if she became a pureblood again, things would never be the same for her.

This has left her without purpose—without a goal or a reason to live. So Anos gives her one: to go to a place where she will endure even more prejudice but, should she get results, will grant her a position higher than she could have ever dreamed. Anos is setting her up to be an example to the remaining pro-pureblood demons—a case study showing that anyone can attain a high rank if they work hard enough and are loyal enough (even if they are his former enemies).

All in all, it was a fun little episode. I look forward to seeing what the new arc has in store as things get moving over the coming weeks.

Come gather around, for it is time to sing the ballads of Anos Voldichad. After beating up the god of time, the concept of racism, not-Zeus, and even a conceptual being specifically created to usurp him, it's hard to imagine what else the universe can throw at him. Especially since, aside from a brief cliffhanger, the ending of the previous cour wrapped up well enough that it's hard to imagine there's a whole extra cour's worth of material, much less that we were supposed to have gotten it sooner. While I'm still pondering what will happen next, most of this episode is dedicated to establishing the show's new status quo. The populace has finally recognized Anos as a true king and can't blend in with the other students anymore. I love how his solution to this dilemma is to use his child form to fake his way back in as a new transfer student, and no one but his followers manages to catch on despite him not even attempting to act differently or hide his absurd levels of power. It was also equally funny seeing Shin turning into a helicopter dad when it comes to Ley and Misa's relationship, and it's nice to see he'll get to stick around as a presence in her life after all the turmoil he went through last season to protect her.

Nice as all that is, though, anyone still keeping up with this series at this stage is likely here to see Anos be as cool as possible, and he gets his chance when one of the other students lets it slip that the Royalists are still secretly plotting to overthrow Anos and reinstill their classist policies. He responds in kind by promising to give them unending nightmares until they clean up their act and tired this gimmick should be at this point, it's still pretty entertaining seeing just how quickly he can establish himself as the dominant force in any situation. I'm also glad it seems like the show is following up on the sub-plot regarding Anos's old teacher, Emilia, and his efforts to teach her that racism is bad by having her walk in the shoes of the mixed-blooded demons she used to oppress. This time, he's sending her to teach at the Hero Academy and live among humans, which seems like a recipe for conflict and one I'm eager to see play out. I'm not sure if that'll be enough to last for an entire season or if there's something bigger at play, but whatever ends up happening, I know that Anos will always be here to solve any problem spectacularly, and it should be a pretty good time.
