Let me take a wild guess what the previews are going to look like; everything on Crunchyroll will be bad, and everything on HiDive will be good.

Studio Apartment, Good Lighting, Angel Included - Kind of surprised none of the reviewers (so far) compared it to Ah, My Goddess!, because the premise sure sounds like a do-over of that franchise. Is AMG just too old for anyone to remember at this point? Theron, if you're out there, back me up here?

Just watched the Train to the End of the World premiere and I'm kinda at a loss for words. That was utterly insane, one of the strangest and most original first episodes I've seen in years. I still don't really know what I've just witnessed, but I'm totally on board for this surreal ride.
Also I'm super happy Rokudenashi is finally doing an anime theme, she deserves it so much. |

Ummm... I remember "Oh/Ah My Goddess" as being 90% comedy/ 10% very sentimental. And the comedy was willing to get pretty darn silly and sometimes outright stupid funny. I liked the comedy, and tolerated the sentimental. A very good show until it beat that combination into the ground. I have not seen this show, but if that is what they are going for, they would be aiming very high. And from the sound of the inital reviews, not off to a good start. |

While I was reading the reviews, I was waiting for an Ah My Goddess link/reference as well. AMG was indeed more comical than romantic (though I would have loved it for it to be more romantic). Based on the first reviews, there a some minor differences between this show and AMG, Belldandy was perhaps a bit naive, but she was ne TSTL Keiichi was never a mooch and did his best to get by on his own (and was succesfull at it). I guess none of the reviewers would like AMG then. |

Off to a sour start to what will be a great season via the moribund Studio Apartment, Good Lighting, Angel Included. The show isn't even as witty as the title, which is at least a tad bit clever. It also suggests a show about a lead finding an apartment which comes with an angel; they didn't even get that right. Richard's use of the word "gormless" to describe the, uh....hero (?) is exactly spot on, as the word itself suggests an awkward, open-mouthed quality that the hero exhibits in spades. I like fluff probably more than the next guy, but give me something. I would be less offended by it if it were offensively bad, because then at least it would register. Two star score is perfect because it's not technically horrible but it is dull dull dull. Past being trivia fodder as the first show of the season, it's hard to imagine this making even a ripple as it sinks from sight. Bring on Yuru Camp, Mushoku Tensei, Sound! Euphonium, Reincarnated as a Slime and a dozen others, please.

I actually almost did, to suggest people hunt that down and watch it instead, but then I changed my mind because I wasn't sure anyone else would still remember it.

Why do you think this? CR usually has at least a few titles that do really well in the Preview Guide in my experience. e.g., from my earlier graphical summaries of the Preview Guide scores for Fall 2023, Frieren, Spy x Family, Precure Full Bloom, and Uma Musume were all on CR and made up 4 of the top 6 (while the other two were Eminence, on Hidive, and Undead Unluck on Hulu). It's possible that one or two shows he liked, which like 90% of all shows was on Crunchyroll, got worse reviews that he agreed with, and so he presumes a anti-Cruchyroll bias. And you are correct, that's silly. Of probably approximately 40 shows Crunchyroll has per season now, I would think that statistically about 10% of them will be great / really good (shows that might draw a 9-10 if you use MAL scoring), 20% will be good, 40% will be middling, 20% will be pretty bad / utterly forgettable and 10% will be terrible. Given that some of the people will like middling shows some of the time, this probably means around half to 60% of Crunchyroll shows will receive less then glowing reviews in the preview section. (I say the higher end there since so many of the reviewers here generally don't like isekais or what they personally consider to be problematic content). So it's not really a knock on Crunchyroll if around 25 of the 40 shows don't fare well in the preview guide. It's more a reflection of the quality of the shows and of the reviewers' personal tastes. HiDive, meanwhile, gets far fewer shows and so probably focuses more on trying to get good ones at a statistically higher level (along with ecchi shows, since those are part of their brand). However, comparing a service with three to four shows a season to one with 40 shows a season really falls in apples and oranges territory. Train to the End of the World does indeed start with a world gone totally crazy smacked up against four normal 'cute girls,' and one dog. One reviewer compared it to the crazy parade in Paprika, and that feels about right to me. I'm not crazy about the premise, but the execution in general and the characters feel well done, so I'm on board for now. No pun intended, sorry.

Train To The End Of The World sounds like one that needs a few episodes to see how it will go. There's been too many anime in the past that have an interesting first episode only to become generic sitcoms or get bogged down in exposition.

Train To The End Of The World started off really out there and it is unclear how it will end up, there is potential for something interesting or at the very least not predictable.

I have a friend who absolutely hates the "Biblically accurate angel" meme, because there's a whole lot of cases in the actual Bible where angels look just like people -- in Genesis alone, there's the ones who deliver the news about Sarah having a kid, or the ones who go to fetch Lot from Sodom*. And a lot of the more Cthulhu-esque stuff that people latch on to is from apocrypha. *Consider Genesis 19:5 -- “Where are the ones who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may be intimate with them.” You think that's about wheels made of eyes? The people of Sodom weren't that kinky.
